Prescott Trip 4 Lights/Lighthouses

Our Second Paddle Day, 12 May 2012

We couldn’t wait to get started. Our day started sunny, with a light wind that had a bit of a chill, this was good as it kept Brent awake and clear headed.  Young guys, you know ………….we love having Brent with us as he can keep you laughing all day long.

We headed to the set meeting point just in case someone we didn't know about wished to join us.  Minutes early we waited till 09:00hrs, then headed down the road to Prescott after filling the truck’s fuel tank “ ouch “

Boats waiting to be launched, where are these Guys?
Timmy's
Arriving in Prescott we found the harbour, with no difficulty. Yep, two of our Lights/ Lighthouses where right there. Driving along the shore we needed to find a launch point close by.  About 300 meters away from the harbour we found a spot,  not ideal but we would manage.   From this site we could actually see all four of the lights/lighthouses we plan to visit today. Kayaks off loaded, it was time to get into our wet suits Hummmmmmmm Pee time
“ no spot “ as condos over looked our launch location.   So dear Mollie waited with the boats as we headed to Tim’s for, well you know.   At the launch site there was a group of scuba divers preparing for what looked like a lesson, Geeeeeeezzzzz that water is down right cool. What are thinking?

Launching was a little tough, waves and a poor
shore line.

Back, Brent & I managed to launch without difficulty, even with the winds picking up out of the west “ 20 km/h “.  Our plan was to paddle to Ogdensburg Lighthouse first and then let the wind and waves carry us east to Wind Mill Historic Lighthouse.   Next we would hug the shore line and paddle back west to Prescott Harbour.  Good plan, however the winds did get much stronger, so our paddle to the harbour was a little bit of a work out……all good, the young guy is still smiling, so it couldn't be that bad.

Heading to the US of A Ogdensburg Lighthouse.

On our first leg of the paddle I mentioned to Brent keep an eye open for Lake Ships as they can move very fast. Well we did looked east and west before our crossing, nothing anywhere.

Paddling and chatting as you do on the water, I wanted to stay close to Brent as he had not been on the water in a kayak, for more than a year and water was more then a little rough.   I said to Brent I'll paddle ahead a little so I can get a good photo of you in the waves.  When I turned my kayak around to get the photo……I was shocked to see the CSL Niagara a Canada Steamship Lines, tankers moving very fast behind Brent. Where did this ship come from, wow.  Brent said " I thought you where pulling my leg " about looking each way.

OOPs!!!! hello CSL Niagara man where did the ship come form without us hearing it.

We made it to Ogdensburg Lighthouse in under 30 minutes, the winds did not allow us to get that one great photo, but we where pleased with what we this one of Brent in the small cove.

Wind Mill Lighthouse over Brents right shoulder.

First one down, now down wind to the Wind Mill Lighthouse, this 3.6km paddle took very little time. It challenged our paddling skills for sure. What a blast riding the waves, this is always fun cause it means you are not having to paddle all that hard. Half way across we could see our Mollie waiting by the lighthouse taking photo’s of us coming in.

Brent & Mollie at Wind Mill Lighthouse.

Wind Mill Lighthouse is a very pretty light and as you guessed by now has a wonderful history. A quick hello and chat with Mollie, photo’s all around and we turned back into the wind and waves heading to Prescott Harbour.

This was not as fun as riding the waves east. Yes, it was a good work out for the two of us, slow as you go. In what seemed a long time “ Mollie said it was not that long “ we made the breakwater light and into the shelter of Prescott harbour.

Brent enjoying flat water in the harbour looking
for a pull out location.

Getting photo’s at both Prescott Harbour Light/Lighthouses, we started to look around inside the harbour for a spot to pull our kayaks out.  The harbour was well protected from wind and waves so finding a spot would be excellent.

Mollie Holding the MS Flag in front of the Prescott Harbour Lighthouse. What an awesome person!!!!!  What you went and got your hair cut, really here we thought you had us in your field glasses.....OOPS

We did managed to find a spot in the harbour, we got out of our boats along the harbour wall and then pushed the kayaks over to Mollie on a dock. Jumping up onto the walkway we walked round and lifted our boats up and out. The nice part about this location was,  we could pull the truck in close, which made loading up that much easier.

Mollie & Brent sitting to a cool lunch, with the
Prescott Breakwater Light in the back ground.
All loaded, we decided eat lunch in the shelter at the harbour. It was not long before the cool breeze drove us to the truck and we headed home.

Yes that is a Tilly hat.
I know it will be the last time, long story don't ask,
you don't want to know ....smiling.

What a great day on the water, looks like Brent has the Kayak Bug again, he asked if he could join us on the Brockville Trip,  Wednesday 16 May, lets hope for warmer weather…….
Some nice/interesting photo's taken during the day

Mollie & Brent reading the gear to be loaded.

This is the part we all love, loading up all the cold wet gear.   Mollie is there to help, a real trooper. However, I still can't believe she went and got her hair cut and now we find out, she hit a garage sale.  A garage sale, put on by the Friends of Wind Mill Lighthouse.  A garage sale without telling us, we all could have gone.....smiling.

Folks we are raising awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Kingston Chapter.  So drop us a line and pledge a couple of bucks, it all helps..
 Thanks Rob & Mollie
